Melville Intermediate - Making Hokey Pokey

The experience of making Hokey Pokey Ice Cream was great. If you would like to make it at home or at school then you can go on the internet and find a recipe. Make sure you follow it as it says and if you are not sure ask a teacher or an adult. The ingredients that you will need are baking soda and golden syrup. Holly Room Eight.

Melville Intermediate - How to Make Maori Poi

On June 14th 2010 Rachael, Annalize, Anahere and Fauiki produced the following video on how to make a Maori Poi.   The students followed the Room 8 Digital Process, they created a brainstorm about what information they wanted to convey, planned and prepared the script.  They then rehearsed and prepared the presentation before recording this in the school library (thanks to Matua Mike and Mrs Langman).  The great idea behind this video is for students to create their own Poi by watching this video.

Melville Intermediate - Hot Air Balloon

By the looks of the Hot Air Balloon I had little hope on this project thinking it would go up in flames the moment the lighter hit the fuel! But its successful flight proved me and the others who doubted it wrong!

As soon as it lifted off it was as good as seeing the first New Zealand made rocket.  It has truly been a great experiment and it gives me the advantage to make other Hot Air Balloons in the future.

Melville Intermediate - How to make Pavlova

For our unit of study this term we have been studying New Zealand Icons.  For the end of term the big task for our students was to create an icon project and as part of that project produce a piece of ICT related work.   Cullen was studying Pavlova and with assistance from Bradley, Kieran and Jaden brought the ingrediatents to school and with the help of Mrs Brown who loaned the Cooking room, was able to make Pavlova.  This video was produced by the students themselves to detail their work. A fantastic effort!

Melville Intermediate - Teaching students in Dunedin Maori

This week in class we've been learning the days of the week in Maori, taught to our students by our University of Waikato teacher, Matua Mike.   We were thrilled to learn yesterday that after we skyped with the Super Scoopers from St Claires School in Dunedin that the students that we'd spoken to had taken the words that we'd taught them and passed them onto students at their school in Dunedin.   Great collaboration between our students.  You can click and visit their wonderful blog by clicking here and seeing their post.  Dont forget if you haven't checked out some of our other wonderful work from the class in the past few weeks you can see our amazing Maori Poi videos by viewing them on this blog here, part one the introduction and the start and then part two the second completion of the Poi Making.

Melville Intermediate - New Zealand Vs. Italy

This morning we have had New Zealands most significant ever Soccer/Football result with a 1-1 draw with reigning World Champions Italy.  It means New Zealand now have a chance of advancing through to the next stage if they beat Paraguay in their last pool game this week.  Because of time difference the game kicked off at 2am here in New Zealand but it was a thrilling result for the national team.  You can read a match report from a New Zealand perspective by clicking here.

Melville Intermediate - Inter-Intermediate Art Day at Berkley Normal School

On the 8th June 2010 I went to Berkley Intermediate with four other Melville Intermediate students to participate in the Inter-Intermediate Art Day. We left about 8:30am in Mrs Van Der Lingens car.
I was very happy to be recognised as a talented artist.  When we arrived at our destination we were all really excited about working with clay. When we got to the art room we got straight into the art. My groups first activity was making little clothes out of clay to hand up on a make believe washing line. Our next task was to draw a face of a Taniwha into a slab of thick brown clay with sharpened ice block sticks as carving tools. I drew a bird. For our next activity we went outside and met Mr Powley. We had to choose a pot from a box (some of us were allowed to make one on the spinning wheel) and put different coloured glaze all over the pot. Next we put it in a fire. In our last activity we had to construct a 3D house and put some scenery around it like cars, trees or animals. The arts day was a great experience, and I would love to do it again. Recount by Bradley, Room 8.

Melville Intermediate - New Zealand at the Soccer World Cup

The greatest sporting even in the world is taking place in South Africa at the moment and New Zealand, for the second time in our history, is at the Soccer World Cup.  The All Whites (our national teams nicknames, owing to the 'All Blacks' being our Rugby Team and the colour of the uniforms!) play their first pool games this week.  Given that we have two goals to our names at the world cup due to goals against Scotland from 1982 we are optimistically hoping we will do well.  The BBC has a fantastic world cup website set up where you can view all the information about the games, players and the teams, you can link to the New Zealand section by clicking here.

Melville Intermediate - Girls Rugby Vs. Maeroa Intermediate

Our game against traditional rivals Maeroa Intermediate was a great game at the Inter-Intermediate Girls Rugby tournament.  It started off fantastically well for Melville with a try to Aaliyah and Melville (in the Green and Red Uniforms were able to hold that lead until half time).  In the second half Janice finished the scoring with a great effort on the right wing, although Maeroa (who are in the red and blue uniforms) had managed to score twice prior to that meaning the game was a 10-10 draw.   The wind was roaring during the game, the wind was lashing against the camera and Benita had to film fast and furious action.  Filmed at Memorial Park Cambridge on May 25th 2010.
