Melville Intermediate - Wai Maths Goes Global!

We're in the final stages of our Wai Maths Competition for our video entry, those of you who have been following along will know that we're been receiving solutions to the problem from all over New Zealand, and recently the world. The Northern Hemisphere are currently on their end of class breaks, so Bradley and Room 8 weren't sure what sort of response that

we'd get, but there's a couple of teachers we've networked with this year who've really gone out of their way. Mr C from Missouri in the USA has used his daughter to solve the original problem You can view the video by clicking on it above or click on the link to the original post here. We're currently also tracking how far the question travels in Kilometres' (it was nearly 6,000 prior to this!) as part of the problem solving process! We've got two final days to answer the question before we put it together for the competition on Monday. We also received this from Mrs Yollis, who despite it being the holidays posted on her page and sent us the video! You can watch it by clicking below or you can view the original post on her class page by clicking here. Thank you so much for contributing to our video and problem solving process!

Melville Intermediate - Wai Maths Update!

It started with an idea about a Mathematical Problem and solving it for the Wai Maths Video Competition, the idea being that we're looking at different ways to problem solve an answer. We're also keeping track of how far the question 'travels' and comes back in two weeks that we have to create our video, totalling the distance. Bradley's estimation for the distance that is travelled is 500 kilometres.

We've had our first answer from Otrohonga in the King Country from Otewa School, their answer is here - a distance of 60 kilometres (120 round trip), we also had it answered from Bairds Mainfrieght Primary School in Otara, Auckland (200 kilometre round trip) and we've just had another answer from New Zealand from the BestLittleClassinNZ! - Broadlands School in Reporoa.

Just today we have a video message from Mr Mac's Classroom in Australia, that meant the question had travelled another 5,000km there and back! We've still got until Sunday and have more answers and more videos on the way.

Thank you SO much to everyone that's taken Bradley's question and viewed it and especially those who have taken the time to prepare an answer for us, we're really excited at this end and the journey hasn't finished yet!

Thank you also to our global audience who have been passing this question on to have more people check it out and spread the word about it. We're very excited to be entering the competition next week and look forward to having some additional problem solving taking place from around the world!

Melville Intermediate - Maori Language Week

As were continuing to look back on highlights from Te Reo Maori for Maori Language Week there's three examples that spring to mind. The first is Room Fourteen's Matariki take on 'Boy' this video was made by the students of Room 14 with Whaea Faith earlier this year. It was filmed by Tyler and inspired by the movie "Boy".

Room 14 Matariki Video: Poi E from myles webb on Vimeo.

The next is our collaboration last year with Hackham East Boys School in Adelaide Australia. The students there performed a Haka at the Adelaide Students Choir Festival, they performed with assistance from their tutor but we were able to help in a series of videos that gave some tips and some help with their performance. This video created by Destin and Cleveland was one from the series!

Finally at Melville Intermediate our Cultural Performing Arts Group (CPA) are currently preparing very hard for shows later this term. Our school had a series of shows last year culminating in a trip to Australia, just before they left they performed at our school, one of the highlights of that show was the Kapahaka section you can view this video below:

The videos for this were created by students in Room 8, and the students in Appleby School made the Poi, you can see them using them! Melville Intermediate - Maori Language Review

This year we've been trying to spread Maori Culture to as many different places as we can by using our publishing to inform our global audience. As its Maori Language Week and we've many new visitors to our site since March, we're going to re-highlight some work from earlier in the year.

One of the first things students of Melville Intermediate due is create a Mihi to introduce themselves in Maori. In March we published ours online as well as a 'how to' tutorial (which we've been watching bouncing around the top ten google hits for that ever since.)

We've had some wonderful feedback and the students are very pleased by this but our friends from Lyudmila's Classroom in Kransnoyarskiykray Kray, Russia have been learning - they have posted two videos, based on our work in New Zealand - its really amazing to think that work that we have produced from one side of the world has had an influence on students on the other side of the world. This is Nikita's video!

We've never met their teacher or students but thanks to the power of collaborating online, and also a big thank you to Allanh K from Appleby School who put our question on her Wiki, they're the first class to answer the problem and their students have done a wonderful job! You can also view their class blog either by clicking on the link on the right or clicking here. We'd also like to acknowledge them for their help! Wonderful!

Melville Intermediate - Wai Math's Help us PLEASE!

We've students in Room 8 that have decided to enter the Wai-Maths video competition. Our idea has to be related towards Mathematics. Bradley's group of students ideas was to use the visitors to our class page to answer a question, record their students answer and compile them altogether.

What we would ask for from our visitors is to read the question and then record your students answer to the question! We're particularly keen to have an explanation of how your students (or yourself) solved the answer, and the strategy that they or you used!

If you could then send us the footage we'll compile it and therefore have a Mathematical question that has been answered by students all around the world!

Bradley has made a short video introducing himself and explaining the question which as follows:

8 men and 2 boys need to cross a river. They have a canoe which
cannot carry more than 1 man or 2 boys at one time. How many river crossing does it take to get everyone across?

We'd like to thank Otewa School for being the first to help with this! See them solve this problem by clicking on this link, and check out their wonderful blog at the same time!
If you need to contact Mr Webb, our teacher you can do so at myles.webb@gmail.com

Melville Intermediate - Cullen's Pavlova Photostory

Recipe for Pavlova -

Cook time: 1 hour
Servings: 1 Pavlova

Ingredients:

3 Egg Whites
1 & 1/2 Cup of Caster Sugar
1 Teaspoon of Vinegar
1 Tablespoon of Cornflour

Directions:

Put egg whites, caster sugar, vinegar and cornflour into a bowl. Beat for 10 minutes with electric beater (about 15 with normal beater). Put baking paper onto tray and pour mixture onto tray, while shaping it into the shape you want the pavlova to be. If you want a bigger pavlova, do the mixture process all over again with more eggs and stuff and then mix them together and put it in the oven for one hour. Then turn the oven off and leave in oven until cold.(Usually overnight). This makes a nice crust on the outside of the pavlova. Before serving, cover the pavlova in whipped cream and your favourite fruit.
