Melville Intermediate - Inter Intermediate Athletics 2012

On Tuesday 26th of November it was the Waikato Inter Intermediate Athletics competition day.  I was so lucky to be put through into the Girls Shotput, Long Jump and 4x100m Relays.  That day was very hot so it made a few events hard.  At 10:30am the first events were Shotput Y7 Girls.  I was up, seeing Girls that looked five years older than me was a bit scary, but guess what I made it into the top six out of twenty girls, for the whole of the Waikato area.

Melville Intermediate - Narrative Writing Thursday

For today's example of Narrative writing you will be traveling to the United States of America, and locating Mr Boylens class.  You will need to go to the following URL here to connect to their main page.  From there you can select one piece of narrative writing of your choice and review it.  You will have a copy of the example that we will be looking at as a class but you will need to choose one additional piece yourself.  Remember to leave the comment in the correct format to also include our address.

Remember the criteria that we are looking at - is it a narrative? What are the features that we would expect to see of narrative writing? Don't forget that you will be again choosing to complete the following tasks, an alternate title for the piece of writing, some feedback that is positive for the author and three questions that you could ask the author about the story that they have written.

Melville Intermediate - Actiivty Week Recount Jamie

Wednesday was really fun we made one thing each block.  In the first block we made bath bombs.  Bianca and I paired up and we made bath bombs orange.  They were meant to be yellow, but I guess we put too much colour in.  We to cut two tea bags open and sprinkle the tea in.  We picked cranberry and strawberry tea.  Mrs De Waard told us to put in essence in as well, so Bianca picked lemon essence.  After we mixed it together we got a paua shell that had glad wrap around it each, as well as an egg carton each.  Both of us sprinkled our mix into the paua shells and egg cartons and left them to set overnight.  In second block everyone made a friendship bracelet each.  I took ages to get our colours and to cut them the right length.  I made a friendship bracelet called swirl and as you made it , it would create a swirl as I go.  Everyone wanted to them at morning tea time be we couldn't because we had to go outside.  In third block we made icing sculptures for our muffins the next day.  We picked our colour and first we made a rose.  It was tricky but I managed to make a really good one.   There were cutters, shapes, and knives.  We could use them to make our icing sculptures.  We had heaps of fun that day!

Melville Intermediate - Tuesdays Narrative Writing

Today in class we are continuing to look at students narrative writing from around the world as examples to get us focussed for our last unit of writing this year. Yesterday we were looking at Emily's work in the UK. Today we are looking at the work of Sam's brother from Dunedin. Sam is a student in Dunedin at St Clairs School, in Room Nine. The original post of Sams is here, and her brothers original post is here.

Students of Melville Intermediate have to read the narrative, create a new title for the story based on the writing, continue the story for an additional paragraph and then ask the author three questions about their narrative. The questions need to be posted in the form of comments on Sams blog or her brothers original post.

Melville Intermediate - Writing from the UK

Currently we are looking at and investigating narrative writing for our literacy work.  As part of that today we looked at piece of narrative writing written by Emily entitled 'Lost'.  You can view the original piece of work here.   Students were set the task of reading the orginal piece of work, then editing it.   They then had three tasks associated with it, to retitle it with a title that reflected the style of the writing, to add a sixth paragraph to the piece of writing in the original style and finally to come up with three questions that they could ask the author of the piece of writing.  The questions were then left to the author, from Bolton in the UK here.

Melville Intermediate - Clowning Around Recount

The night of September 6th 2012 we were performing 'Clowning Around' 2012 show.  Everyone was excited and ready to perform our dances and parts for the last time.  The lights were dim and pointed to stage.  Our show had begun.  First off it was Zumba dancing, everyone clapped and cheered.  This show was about bullying and how to deal with it.  Mrs Bleakin had planned this show out years ago and she was really proud to see it actually happen.  We couldn't have done it without her! Around about in the middle of the show my dancing parts came, I was in ballet and rock and roll.  Everyone's costumes were great and looked really awesome on stage.  Kyla is one of the best singers in the school so she sung at the end of the show.  Every single person in the Melville Intermediate Hall clapped and cheered until the end.  The show couldn't have been done or performed without Mrs Bleakin.  I'd like to thank her for her awesome job.  I have never had so much fun in my life.  At the end of the show everyone went up on stage and bowed.  I had a great night!

Jamie wrote this recount about out our Term Three production of Clowning Around, its been submitted to the MIS Magazine and also written for her portfolio, for those of you who want to order the DVD of the show it can be ordered through the school office.

Melville Intermediate - Waikato Tramping

For activity week we were involved in Waikato Tramping.  First day we climbed Karoi in Raglan, the second day we climbed Pirongi. the first day at Karoi was good weather bad slopes we use up most of our energy but the lookout was worth it beautiful just beautiful (wish we got to the summit). Day two we climbed Pirongai. The weather really foggy but we made it to two lookouts (but again not to the summit).  These are some of the photographs taken by Mr Willis and students during the treks. [This is Sam's recount of his activity week experience, you can also see Veronica in the Karoi picture, the students took five hours to ascend and descend on the first day! This is for the school magazine and Sam's portfolio].

Melville Intermediate - Activity Week 2012

On the 14th of November in Term Four I went to activity week with my friends.  The activity that we were doing was indoor rock climbing, high ropes and waterworld.   We went to the first activity which was indoor rock climbing.  When we got there we had to wait for ten minutes and then a woman named Sylvia came out and invited us inside.

When we got in she told us what to do and went climbing.  It was really fun because there was lots of climbing to do.  Then at 10:30am we went outside and looked at the Eclipse.   After we watched the Eclipse we went back inside to eat our lunch.  After we ate our lunch we had a rest and went back to the climbing spot.  A few hours later Harry picked us up and then dropped us off at the lake.

We were playing sport at the lake until it rained then it turned sunny again.  A few minutes later Harry picked us up again and we went back to school at 1:30pm.  We played some more and then when it was close to home time Mrs Wilson told us to go in her room and said "We might be going bowling and laser tag instead of high ropes". After she told us the bell rang and we all went home.

After rock climbing we went to bowling and laser tag instead of high rope because it was raining. We had 2 turns of each and we went bowling first. We went to making the teams and our first game I came 3rd and at my second game I came first and Kaea coming second. After bowling we waited until we went laser tag then the teacher told us we can go to laser tag. Before we got to play we watched a video about the rules and then we got put in teams. Before the ame started we got put into teams and I was in the blue team. When the game finished I looked at the scoreboards and I came first. I had about 4,100 points. It was really fun and after we waited we went back and played again. I was in the blue team again and after the game finished I looked at the scoreboard again I came second with 5,000 points. It was really fun and then all of us got icecream and iceblocks. We had a really fun day then Harry picked us up, went back to school, watched a movie then went home.

On the last day of our activity we went to Waterworld and when we got there we got change and then went swimming. It was really fun and when we were aloud to go at the waterslide we waited in a line and then walked up the steps then lined up.  I went on the blacktube first it was really dark and you couldn't see anything but black.  After an hour and a half the Go Bus picked us up and dropped us off at Blastakarts.

Melville Intermediate - Raglan Part Two

We all arose early on the morning of Wednesday the 14th of November the first of three adventurous days that were known as activity week 2012, the first to ever take place in Melville Intermediate history. Activities ranged from rock climbing to cooking to paintball and everything else imaginable however, the groups of students in my activity were lucky enough to be leaving Hamilton, and spending three days in Raglan paradise amongst the finest of nature. After what seemed like the trip of our lives, up whines and hills, then a steep uphill tramp carrying heavy luggage we all fell to the ground with a sigh of relief as we knew our ordeal was over. After a tour of the grounds and a quick munch we settled into our tipis. After being informed of the hour hike (each way) that we were about to take to get to the beach our faces lite up, eagerly with a surge of excitement we packed all our things and set off. Along our journey we came across gorgeous fresh water that had a beautiful cold nourishing taste (which also happened to be the water that came out of tap back at the camping grounds). The night brang a few surprises some games of spotlight were just the right way to finish our first night at Solescape came Raglan until unwanted guests entered our tipis! As the following day awoken, all of us still half asleep of coarse haled ourselves out of bed for duties and breakfast. Two whistles were blown, tents and tipis were rustled and “time to get up “was yelled out. Unsure of the days plans we all gathered in the rain to have a discussion, as soon as everybody was aware our days plans we geared up, jumped into our togs, piled into the cars and headed off to go kayaking in the pouring rain. Whilst kayaking we were taught how to get back on your kayak if you fell out, we played games a most of all had a fun time and got soaked!. Arriving back to shore we were all shivering and blue, and because it was such a nasty day we decided a trip to Waingaro Hot Springs would do us all well. “Hydro slides here we come” yelled everybody gamely “but first the long walk up the hill”. Our last bit of energy for that day went towards cooking pizzas for dinner in the mean wood fire pizza oven. Exhausted, we were all happy to get to sleep that night. Our last day didn’t hold much excitement, a big cleanup, a short trip the Raglan bowl and the harbor just chilling out having a mean feed of fish ‘n’ chips and just enjoying the last few hours of our time in Raglan. Finally we boarded the bus and set off on our long trip home. Written By: Sian

Melville Intermediate - PrEP Recount Douglas

On the start of PrEP (Primary Enterprise Program, our Schools Market Day - Mr Webb) we didn't sell anything so we had to drop the price of our items to twenty MiSMs (Melville Intermediate School Money).  Our first customer then brought one of our wind instruments.  After time lots of our wind instruments were bought by our customers.  We had only 11 instruments left.  When it was five o'clock we dropped the price further to 15 MISMs.   Later on lots and lots of customers came and brought almost all of our wind instruments.  When all of the customers had left we only had two instruments left and Nathan H's Mum brought one of those.  I had been demonstrating the instruments by spinning them, I got tired of spinning the instrument so I went and bought a slushy and I got a free sherbert from my mate.   After that I went on to the Haunted House and I got a free slime.   When I came out of the Haunted House I went back to my business.  When I came back I saw Deighton's Dad buy the last one.  After we were sold out I started watching some guys play some Ps2 games.

Melville Intermediate - PrEP Recount

It was a hot day on the 2th of October and it was the day that PrEP was going to start.  It was the end of the school day and most of my group went home and brought all the things that we needed.  When they got back we all set up the table and the food that we were selling.  We were selling slushies for 15 MISMs and sherbert for 10 MISMs and our group name was the Sunny Shark.  The business started selling them and after a few minutes some Japanese students from Ritsumeikan brought food from our business.  After a few more minutes more people from school and parents and brought lots of slushies, we nearly ran out of cups.  While we were selling food me and Brae went out and played MW3.  We had to pay 10 MISMs just to get in.  After we finished playing we went back to our business and and saw lots of money in our bag.  I counted it and it was just enough to pay the bank the MISMs that we owed them.  That was really good because it meant that we weren't going to go bankrupt.  An hour and a half later we only had thirty minutes to go and we had to lower our prices down to 5 MISMs.  After we lowered our prices down lots of people came to us and brought our slushies so we nearly ran out of them.  After thirty minutes PrEP finally finished and we had so much money that we weren't even close to going bankrupt.  We had lots of fun and it was fun running that business.

Melville Intermediate - PrEP Recount

On Thursday 25th of October 2012 we were preparing for our PrEP day which happened on Friday 26th of October 2012.  We didn't just start on Thursday but we started to organize for PrEP on the term before this term.  We started to get into our groups and talk about what we are going to sell on our PrEP day.  Our groups name was Sugar Power and our group members were Icis, Asinate, Kayla and Joseph.  On the four weeks before PrEP day we decided to sell the following things: sherbet, popcorn, lollie kebabs, raro, raffle tickets and drink.  All the stuff that we sell we decided to sell them all for 5 MiSMs each.

The PrEP time was 4:00pm-6:00pm so that meant we have to make the things organized before the PrEP time.   We created a sign for our group.  We had to make the popcorn, the sherbet and make the lollie kebabs.  Myself and Kayla were making the popcorn and the sherbet and Joseph was creating the sign and making the lollie kebabs by himself because Icis wasn't here.

After school we finished everything that we had to do.   We were wondering what else we could do so we helped the Scary Movie group if they wanted help and they did need help so we helped them to set up their store.   When we finished helping them it was time to start setting up and doing our store outside of Room Five.   Kayla and I went to the design room to get our table.  After that we set up everything outside Room Five.   There was already some people walking around outside.

Now the PrEP Market Day was starting and the people were using their MISMs to buy stuff from the shops.  After that we had lots of customers and most of the people were buying popcorn.   It was lots of fun.

On the 26th of October Melville Intermediate had their PrEP Market Day at School.  My group was called 'Sweet Express'.  In my group was Joey, Connor, Liam and myself Levi.  In our group we sold mini-donuts, popcorn, lemonade and windmills.   During PrEP we had twenty five minute breaks.   In my break I went to my friends stall played V8 Super Cars and Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe.  The worst part of PrEP was the packing up, it took around half an hour.  It took half an hour to pack up and about fifteen minutes to clean up.

Melville Intermediate - PrEP Recount from Sarah

On Friday the 26th of October our school had PrEP Market Day. It went from 4:00pm and ended at 6:00pm.  Everyone in the school was in groups and they had their own stalls or shops.  Out group did a haunted house and it was called 'Scarey Movie'.  In our PrEP group we had Rose, Kylie and I.  It was 25 MiSMs to get in which stands for Melville Intermediate School Money.  That included gloop or slime and a chocolate lolly or lollipop.  Many people came to our haunted house and some were really scared but others just thought it was funny or stupid.  Some people thought we were just going to be watching a movie because of the name 'Scary Movie'.  One person was so scared that she punched Kylie on the arm!  When we went on our break we bought lots of things, some were really kind of expensive which was sad.  I had 50 MiSMs which was the same as ten dollars.  I spent it all on lollies and a book that broke so that was annoying but I fixed it.  When we got back to our Haunted House so many people wanted to get it that it was crazy.  They were giving us MiSMs but we couldn't take them because Rose still wasn't back so lots of them left.   When Rose got back lots of people came back and when they went into our Haunted House they scared us more than we scared them which was kind of funny.  It was really long and tiring day but it was still really, really fun! I still didn't like that the Year Seven's got to do it but it was still really cool.  At the end of the day we had 495 MiSMs which people had paid to get in which was really good, and we weren't expecting PrEP to be as fun as it was.

Melville Intermediate - Brae's PrEP Recount

On the 26th of October our school had PrEP Market Day.   When I got to school my Mum and I went to Room Five and put our stuff on the bench.   Then I saw Brent with the spoons.  After me and Brent had a talk, Nathan came and we waited for Ryan which took ages.   When he finally came we started to set up the stall.   So we dragged the desks through the door and made our stall.  Then I put the ingredients on the table and PrEP started.   We stood there for a while and some Japanese students came and brought some Sherbet.  They wanted different flavors but Nathan just gave them the same one.  We also sold them to some little kids that thought that the slushies were really cold but I warned them.  We sold a lot and at the end of PrEP had 820 MISMS in the bag.   At the end of PrEP we had to clean up a huge mess from the slushie machine.   After the clean up we were tired, but we had fun and it was a good day.

Melville Intermediate - Survivor: Melville Episode 2

In the first episode of the 2012 season (full recap below) Parauri won the first challenge sending Whero to elimination. In the second episode Whero were looking to press home their advantage, Parauri to even the score.

In this episode the teams had to run a short course holding onto a rope and work as a team, but temptation was just on the horizon... Any player could leave their team at any time and make a dash for the immunity horse that was located a short distance away. Would anyone betray their team to guarantee themselves another round in the game? Who would win the race to the finish? Who would be eliminated?

To further complicate matters for Whero apart from losing the first challenge both Tara (CPA trip to Auckland) and Aublix (Moon boot) had to have last minute replacements filling in for them! How would Jayden and Shannon match up at short notice?

This season has only five weeks remaining, until the sole survivor remains! Filmed on location at Melville Intermediate by the production team of Veronica, Bianca and Jessie from Room Six.

Please note: this episode was filmed during rain and high winds and contains some distortion during the running of the challenge please take care with the volume levels!

Episode One - Full Recap.
The 2012 season started with an indoor challenge due to difficult weather outside. Both teams had to stack die on top of each other with the 'six' facing the top and put a small silver trophy on the top to signify victory. Both Whero (red) and Parauri (brown) started strongly. The break came in the seventh round when Adrian defeated Aublix to make the scores 4-3 to Parauri. In the next round to force sudden death Tyryn had to beat Woody, but he was unable to do so and Parauri won the first challenge, sending Whero to the elimination vote. In the vote for Whero, everyone was at risk. The first 'blind side' of the game took place, when Brent from Room Five thought he was voting with the others to eliminate Aublix, however everyone, including his best friend in the game, Bunnarath, voted to send Brent out instead and he was the first individual eliminated in 2012 and Room Five was the first classroom to be taken out of the game.
