Melville Intermediate - Draw a Stick Man

Draw a Stickman.com

Some of you will be familar with this site, which has been around for the last couple of years, but you may not be aware that they have updated it with a 'Chapter Two', on Monday the ICT Module class road tested the game, and then were posed the question - what level (year level) of student would it suit and what is a lesson that could come from it.

The class decided that it would be most suitale for Y3/4 students.   They decided that it would encourage students to be creative, to use something that they themselves had created, that the quality of your drawing didn't matter it was still useful, if you want to visit the site click on the link here.

Melville Intermediate - Girls Rugby against Tokoroa Intermediate 2013

On Tuesday 21st of May 2013 Melville Intermediate fielded a team in the 2013 Inter Intermediate Girls Rugby Competition.  We had the hardest possible test this year up first, a dominating team who would in time become the eventual champions, defeating Peachgrove Intermediate School in the final, the Girls from Tokoroa Intermediate School.

They blew Melville away in the first half, dominating forward play backed up by strong attacking from thier backs.  Tokora continued this throughout the tournament, remaining undefeated and were worthy champions for 2013.   These highlights were filmed by Kayla from Room Five.  Melville Intermediate are in the green with red trim.  Tokoroa are in the red.

Melville Intermediate - Questions and Answers for Scotland

Those of you who are regular followers of our class page will know about the recent collaboration with students from Lochardil Primary School in Iverness, Scotland.  Jamie is researching Scottish culture for her cultural diversity work that we are doing next term.   P6/7 replied to us and replied in depth, and then they posted on their wonderful class page a series of questions for us to answer about New Zealand for them.   Their questions were:

What is your national anthem?
What are your traditional foods?
What is the weather like where you live?
What is the story behind your flag?
What time do you start and finish school?
What religions do people follow?
How big is your town?
What’s homework like in your school?
What’s the national plant?
What music do you listen to?
Do you have any traditional dances?
What sports do you do?
What languages do you speak?
Is your town, Hamilton, named after the town Hamilton in Scotland?
Has anyone in your class been to Scotland?

Well today in class Jamie, along with assistance from Kristal and Elizabeth sought some answers to these question from our new friends in Scotland.  We talked about an interested way to respond and it was decided to go class to class at Melville Intermeidate and ask different students from different classes (and one deputy principal, thank you Mrs Patterson!) to answer the questions.  This video was shot on Friday 25th May 2013.

Melville Intermediate - Jamie (and Melville) Famous in Scotland!

We've just started our work on Cultural Diversity which is our unit of work for this term.  Each of our students is researching a culture and as part of that culture is going to condcut an interview with someone from a different culture.  Jamie from Room Five is looking at Celtic/Scottish culture.  Earlier this week Jamie used google to locate some class pages from Scotland and left a comment asking for some assistance with her research questions.  The original post with the questions is here.  Its fair to say that she has been thrilled by the response and as a class we are very excited.  Jamie has recieved some wonderful feedback and we've discovered and made some wonderful connections with classes and students around the world.

We'd like to thank everyone that has responded already to Jamie and in particular we'd like to thank the staff and pupils from P6/7 Lochardil Primary School in Scotland for their simply awesome response to Jamies Questions, which you can read by clicking here.

Melville Intermediate - Waikato Kids Lit Quiz 2013

‘WOOO, YEAH, AWESOME!!!!!!’ All the kids in the chapel at St Paul’s Collegiate cheered because they got the first question in the alieus section right. It was the night of Lit Quiz and 4-8 kids from schools all around the Waikato had joined together on the 16th of May, to do the International Kids Lit Quiz. Kids Lit Quiz is a competition for kids all around the world who are really good at reading. It is a fun competition and kids and Adults both enjoy it because adults get to win prizes as well as the kids. So anyway we were sitting there with big toothy grins on our faces because we had finished hearing the answers for the alieus section and we had a pretty good score.
The night went by fast but we got pretty good scores in alieus, constructions, authors, myths and legends and pop culture. We had 2 Melville Intermediate School groups there and my group, (group 2) bet the other team, we came 27th out of 54 schools and our overall score was 52 out of 100.

You can find out more information about the Kids Lit Quiz from their website here.

Melville Intermediate - Cultural Diversity

This term our subject is cultural diversity.  We're looking at cultures around the world that we have a connection with to Room Five at Melville Intermediate School.  Each of our students are preparing interview questions for people from a different culture.  One of the students from our class who is doing this is Jamie, who is looking at Scottish/Celtic culture.

As our students are working on this procedure we've spent the last two weeks creating a set of interview questions. and then begun a process of conferencing, refining and thinking about our questions.  Our next task is to use a program to create audio files of our questions, and start conducting interview in person, using audio files and using Skype.

This is Jamie's introduction and a set of quesitons that she is looking to have answered.

Hi my name is Jamie. I go to Melville Intermediate. I am studying Celtic Culture. I have some questions that I would like someone who is Celtic to answer:
  • What are the main celebrations in your country?
  • What is the story behind your flag?
  • Where did the Bagpipes come from?
  • Do you eat animals?
  • Do you speak English or Gaelic?
  • What is your national animal?
  • What are your two most famous foods?
  • Do you have any traditional dances?
  • Do you have a national plant?
You can see examples of some of Jamie's work here.

Melville Intermediate - Incredibox and Room 8 at WIS

We're always looking for new and interesting sites related to learning and information.  Yesterday  Mr Webb discovered Room 8 and WIS.   They're an Intermediate located just outside of Nelson.  You can visit their wonderful classroom page here.  One of the programs that they've recently featured is Incredibox.

We had a 'play' with that in class today and the students loved creating the music with the program.  It had the students captivated.  We had no problems starting and the slogan for the site is 'drag... drop and create' and that sums up the creation process perfectly.  Within no time the students were creating thier own compositions and have a fantastic experience.   You can click on the Incredibox site by clicking here.

Melville Intermediate - visits Maeroa Intermediate Room Nine

Maeroa Intermediate Room Nine is a class page that has been started by the students and the teachers just this year.  It's got a variety of material online and Maeroa Intermediate is a similar school to Melville Intermediatte in Hamilton.

Students of Room Five your task is to visit the Maeroa Intermediate Room Nine class page.  You need to select one piece of work or material that has been posted online and leave a comment about it.  Remember the success criteria that we have set for your commenting on other students work.  Ensure that you leave our URL in return.

This is a video of our Girls Rugby team playing Maeroa Intermediate in the Inter Intermediate Girls Rugby Competition last year at Memorial Park, Cambridge.  Maeroa are in the blue and red and Melville Intermediate are in the green with red trim.

This is what was written about last years game

This is the second to last video from our 2012 Girls Rugby Tournament.  It's highlights from our fourth pool game, against Maeroa Intermediate.  Melville were on a roll at this point having won three games in a row, one more would equal the total number of wins from last year.  Standing in Melville's way was a very dangerous Maeroa Intermediate School, who scored an extremely good try early into the match and managed to convert it to take an early lead.   Melville however by this point we really gelling well as a team including showing some strong defence, wait until you see Veronica's ankle tap just after the Maeroa try! Filmed by Veronica from Room Five at Memorial Park, Cambridge on Tuesday 8th May 2012.

We also have played Maeroa Intermediate in a variety of this year (Touch) and last year (Touch, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball to name but a few!) Our 2012 Girls team had to play Maeroa Intermediate at Basketball and this is the highlights from a game that took place on Tuesday 7th March 2012 with Melville winning 49-5, for this game Melville are in the Green/Red and Maeroa are in the blue.

Melville Intermediate Vs. Peachgrove Intermediate

On Tuesday 14th May Melville Intermediate Girls Basketball team went to play at the YMCA in the Hamilton Tuesday night competition.  The team was scheduled to play against a Peachgrove Intermediate Girls team but discovered that we were playing their Boys 'B' team instead.  A close first quarter saw the score 8-8, Peachgrove took a lead into half time of four points, before the third quarter ended up tied again, this time at 22 all.  In the final quarter Melville Intermediate pulled away able to defeat Peachgrove Intermediate 30-24.  We had a couple of players sick, Leseili had a hurt hand so she could only play one handed! These highlights were filmed by Hayley Jade.  Melville Intermediate are in thier red and green top while Peachgrove are wearing the Maroon with gold

Melville Intermediate - School Entrance Way for Cook Islands

Thanks to our Feedjit link we've been watching our traffic in the classroom regularly so we sometimes see visitors looking at particular posts or information.  We usually have it running our data projector/interactive whiteboard.  It means that we know what is popular and sometimes means that we can help our audience.  Overnight and this morning we saw that we were having visitors from the Cook Islands looking at the Melville Intermediate School entrance.  The main entrance to our school is very special and was designed by Matua Peter and Matua Gene.  We looked at the original post from when it was made and saw that the photo's are no longer available online.  We have students that are re-taking those photos now and we will post them shortly.  Hope that helps.

Point England School: better than the News.

Last week there was quite a bit in the news about the visit of Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas to New Zealand. While he was officially appearing here as part of clothing company promotion, he also visited Point England School and the Manaiakalani cluster in Auckland and made a donation of $100,000 to the cluster!  The students from our class were wishing that they lived in Auckland for this experience.   This video is from Point England School of the event and was embedded from their site.

Firstly we heard about it originally through our friends from Room Thirteen at Point England School. They've been one of our longest buddy blog sites and the students have always got wonderful work that is posted. We have their page on our side bar, so when the visit happened at thier school we heard about it quickly. From there we were able to look at other reports and see this wonderful video. Over the following days some of the students from Point England School wrote about their expereinces. You can see Darius recount here. Josephine is another student from PES, she's been featured during the holidays on this blog because she was posting so regularly and also because she was out posting our entire class earlier this year you can read her thoughts on the event by clicking here.

The other great thing apart from hearing and seeing this event so quick is that the students present have blogged about it in detail, much more so than we were able to see on the news later that evening.  There would have been students from our school who would have known more about the event than before it aired on the news later that evening.

Melville Intermediate - Girls Rugby 2013

Tomorrow is the first day of School for Term Two, 2013.  One of the event that is taking place this term is the Waikato Intermediate Schools Inter-Intermediate Girls Rugby Competition.  Tomorrow in Room Five, we are having our first muster, however the tournament is next week in Cambridge.

To remind the players of whats required its time to look back at the highlights from last year... Melville Intermediate Girls had an amazing tournament losing only to once to Peachgrove Intermediate, which included wins against Morrinsville, Te Awamutu, Maeroa, Fairfield and Tokoroa Intermediate.  A narrow loss in the final saw Melville second best result of the year.  This video, shot by Kayla from Room Five, is the highlights of the tournament, Melville Intermediates Schools best tries of the 2012 season.

Melville Intermediate - Inside the School Canteen

This term, which starts tomorrow, we're putting together our Canteen/Tuck Shop material that we collated last term from around New Zealand and the world.  The aim of the student councillors who were working on it was to improve the options of students at Melville Intermediate School.  For our inspiration we used the classrooms that we are linked with, and Mr Webb used our PLN.  What we discovered was that not everyone knew what a 'Canteen' was - in the USA its a water bottle!  However we also filmed our own Tuck Shop/Canteen, which is available for our students to buy items for their lunch... and we sent Elizabeth, Jamie and Kristal to film inside.  Filmed at Melville Intermediate School at the end of term one.  Term two starts tomorrow.

Melville Intermediate - Daniel Recounts Term One

Term one has been a great term I have done a lot of cool things. One of the highlights of term one is when the Japanese students came to our school they were cool to talk to. I liked doing P.E when we vs. other classes rooms in diff
erent games. I really like modules I like the patter tennis because I learnt a lot of things about the game. In modules I also liked inquiry because I got to make a waka out of newspaper which I enjoyed. I really liked music tech because the year 8s are allowed to go on all the instruments. I liked doing maths in class because I like maths, and the activities in maths are very cool I reckon. I also forgot to say how art was fun, first we drew a picture of a Māori god I chose Tane Mahuta.  After that we made masks out of newspaper and glue then we painted them and put Māori designs on them which was cool. I enjoyed playing basketball at morning tea and lunch time, I also liked going to the library and playing Jenga and I also Connect Four. Term one has been pretty cool I cant wait until term two.
